Osówka Underground City – Mysterious Complex in the Owl Mountains

Osówka is one of the most intriguing and mysterious places in Poland. This massive underground complex, built during World War II as part of the "Riese" (Giant) project, still conceals many secrets. What was its purpose? What can you see inside? Here's everything you need to know before your visit.

What is Osówka?

Osówka is the largest of several underground complexes built in the Owl Mountains between 1943-1945 by Nazi Germany. The entire project was codenamed "Riese" (Giant in German) and included several facilities scattered throughout the region.

What makes Osówka particularly fascinating is that despite years of research, historians still don't know exactly what the complex was intended for. The Germans evacuated and destroyed documentation before the area was captured by the Red Army in 1945, leaving behind only tunnels, chambers, and many unanswered questions.

History and Theories

Construction of the complex began in 1943, when the tide of war had turned against Germany. The Nazis sought secure locations in the mountains, far from Allied air raids.

The work was carried out by prisoners from concentration camps – it's estimated that about 13,000 workers were employed in the entire Riese project, and thousands died due to harsh conditions, hunger, and disease.

To this day, several theories exist about what Osówka was meant to be:

The truth is that the complex was never completed. When the Red Army approached in 1945, the Germans hastily evacuated, leaving behind only bare tunnels and many mysteries.

What Can You See During the Tour?

Today Osówka is open to tourists, offering several tour routes. The complex consists of about 1,700 meters of corridors and chambers carved into the rock.

Tourist Route (Standard Tour)

The most popular option, perfect for first-time visitors and families.

During the tour, you'll see the main tunnels, chambers of various sizes, ventilation shafts, and hear about the complex's history and theories about its purpose.

Extreme Route

For the more adventurous – a route through less accessible parts of the complex.

This route includes crawling through narrow passages, climbing, and traversing less developed sections of the complex. Not recommended for those with claustrophobia.

Boat Tour on the Underground Lake

A unique attraction – a boat ride on an underground lake formed in one of the chambers.

Practical Information

Temperature: Inside the complex, it's constant 8-10°C year-round. Even in summer, bring a warm jacket or fleece. In winter, it's actually warmer inside than outside!

Footwear: The tunnels can be damp and slippery. Wear comfortable, closed shoes with good grip. Avoid heels and sandals.

Tickets and reservations: During peak season (summer, weekends), it's worth booking tickets online in advance. Tours depart at set times – arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour.

Accessibility: Due to the nature of the terrain (stairs, uneven surfaces), the complex is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

Photography: Allowed on most routes. Some areas may have restrictions – the guide will inform you.
