Why Visit Wielka Sowa?

Wielka Sowa attracts tourists for several reasons. First, it's a relatively easy peak to conquer – even beginner hikers can manage it without problems. Second, at the summit stands a distinctive stone observation tower offering some of the most beautiful views in the Sudetes.

Additionally, the Owl Mountains are less crowded than the neighboring Karkonosze, making a trip to Wielka Sowa a great alternative for those seeking peace and contact with nature without tourist crowds.

Popular Hiking Trails to Wielka Sowa

Several trails of varying difficulty lead to the summit. Below are the most popular routes you can choose depending on your fitness level and available time.

Trail from Jugowska Pass (Blue Trail)

This is the most popular and easiest route to Wielka Sowa. Jugowska Pass (about 740 m above sea level) is an excellent starting point with a large parking lot and dining facilities.

Trail via Kalenica Pass (Yellow Trail)

A longer but very scenic route leading through beech forest. Along the way, you can admire characteristic rock formations.

Trail from Rzeczka (Red Trail)

For those staying near Rzeczka – you can start directly from the village and combine the trip with other attractions. The route leads through beautiful forest terrain.

When is the Best Time to Hike Wielka Sowa?

Wielka Sowa is accessible year-round, but each season offers different experiences:

Spring (April-May) – ideal for first trips after winter. Forests come to life, and trails are still relatively empty.

Summer (June-August) – longest days and best visibility. It's worth going early in the morning to avoid heat and the most traffic.

Autumn (September-October) – absolutely magical time! Beech forests take on golden and red colors, creating unforgettable views.

Winter (November-March) – for experienced hikers. Snow-covered trails require proper footwear (crampons, poles), but the views from the tower of the snow-covered Sudetes are worth the effort.

What to Bring on the Trip?

Even for a short trip, it's worth preparing properly:
